4 answers

5x - 4y = 13
2x+ 3y =  -4

Divide first equation by 5 so the coefficient of x is 1.
1x - 0.8y =  2.6
2x+ 3.0y = -4

Use first equation to eliminate the x term in second equation.
1x - 0.8y =  2.6
       4.6y = -9.2

Divide second equation by 4.6 so the coefficient of y is 1.
1x - 0.8y =  2.6
       1.0y = -2

Use Second equation to eliminate the y term in first equation.
1x           =  1
       1.0y = -2

x = 1, y = -2

equation1: 5x- 4y= 13
equation 2: 2x+ 3y= -4
multiply equation 1 by 3 and equation 2 by 4

eq 1: 15x - 12y = 39
eq 2: 8x +12y = - 16
add the two
23x = 23
x = 1

substitute for x in equation 1
5*1 - 4y = 13
5 - 13 = 4y
-8 = 4y
-2 = y

substitute for x and y in equation 2 to check
2*1 + 3(-2) = -4
2 -6 = -4
-4 = -4 checks

x = 1
y = -2

to solve this equation multiply the first equation by 3 and the second equation by 4 you will get:

15x - 12y = 39
8x + 12y = -16

add this tow equation you will get

23x = 23

x=1

substitute x=1 in the second equation you will get:

2 + 3y = -4

y = -2
