What was the best/most helpful gift you received as new/expecting parents?

My friend is expecting, and instead of clothes I wanted to give them something useful or practical.

Thank you!

I agree with the dinners absolute godsend.
The other thing was when people came over and did a little housework like folding washing.

But if you want to give an actual gift. lots of choccies and snacks that can be opened one handed while feeding and Towels were useful also

We received some diapers and at the time I thought oh diapers. But once baby got here I was SO thankful for the diapers! We were really blessed. My mum bought a crib and changing table for us. We actually received way too many lil outfits. She was a bigger baby and she grew so fast there were many outfits she never wore. So if you do buy clothes try to get them in larger sizes. Of course it is hard to match season wise when you don't know how fast they grow. Dreft or Baby All (much cheaper than dreft) laundry detergent would also be a nice useful gift. If you can go in with others, you guys could get them a bigger gift, like a stroller or high chair or some of the other big ticket items. Good luck!

If you really want to take care of her, organize a group of your mutual friends to bring dinner over to her house for a period of time. My friends would call every day, it's my turn to bring your dinner, what time would you like? They did that for 3 weeks! It was SO helpful.

On baby #2, I was all ready with my brand of baby wipes (the thin type). One of my gifts was a container of the thick kind. I had no idea that I could clean up a dirty diaper without getting it near my hands!!

Personally, I could never have enough binkies in the house. My friends gave me an umbrella stroller. It was SO handy. Some nursing moms really like this big round pillow that helps support the child while he or she is nursing--it's called a boppy, I think. I used to work at a kids store, and we'd sell those as soon as we got them.

I got a musical mobile that winds up from my colleagues. Found it very good because baby was engaged at least for a few minutes when watching it, so I was free to do something or get something quick.
Would have liked a baby carrier ever since I got pregnant, but found out by using a borrowed one that my baby did not enjoy being carried in it. Was glad I did not buy one.

A medical kit with all the essential medicines that a baby will need in the first year. I got two of them at my shower and I used them both, babies get lots of colds and diaper rash, those were a God send. Diapers and wipes are great too. Good Luck!

I think the best gift is a big bundle of nappies, wet wipes, baby powder, cotten wall, if they are choosing to bottle feed then you could also get some baby milk, It really comes in handy with all the expences of having a baby.

My front pack was the best gift I got myself after I didn't get one at my showers. It saved my arms for all 3 of my children. I never tried it as a back pack but it could have been used that way.

Some of the ladies from work, those who had little ones, gave me a basket filled with powder, diaper rash ointment, lotion, towels, baby wipes, and a Wal-mart gift card!

We have found muslin squares so handy... mopping up sick, burping, drying bottoms, swaddling, surface protectors in fact they can be used for pretty much anything!

Or what about something like making a nappy cake? Basically the layres are rolled up nappies (my friends used a bigger size than newborn so we could store them until needed) and you add things like teddies, rattles, baby power/lotion, scratch mitts, booties, hats etc. You can buy them as well, think you can google 'nappy cake'.

time!!! Someone to sit with the baby so I can shower. Someone who will fold and put away laundry while I get a nap. Someone who will let me carry on an adult conversation, not just babytalk!!

Tangible gifts... diapers. They can get pretty pricy.
