Goldfish grow fast and create LOTS of waste. If you overstock, the nitrogen in their wastes will quickly build up to a toxic level. It really sucks to only keep 2 or 3 goldfish in an aquarium though. Most fish just look better in small "schools".

There are ways you can increase the amount of fish any tank can hold (and it really shouldn't cost you much money or labor). I always get a bigger filter than i need. I'm not suggesting that you buy a HUGE expensive filter. I don't see why you could not keep a group of 4 fancy goldfish in a 5 gallon aquarium as long as you get a filter that is rated for around 150-200 gallons p/hour. I would suggest a Penguin Bio-Wheel 150 or 200. They are a little more expensive than Tetra filters, but $20-$40 is worth the investment.

Just make sure you keep up with doing weekly 20% water changes.

Also, do what you can to keep the tank as cool as possible. Goldfish thrive in cooler stable water temperatures. But, remember: TROPICAL fish hate cool water and will quickly die if the water temps keep changing. Goldfish are fine as long as the temp doesn't fluctuate above 70-75 degrees F.

Good luck and happy fishkeeping!

A five gallon is small! Try getting a 20 or bigger, but in a 5 gallon u could put a Betta fish. A Betta fish is a fighting fish, just to let you know.

None. Zero. Zip. Nada

Fancy Goldfish need at least 10-20 gallons each. They grow far too large for a 2 gallon tank. If you want goldfish in a 2 gallon tank, I would recommend to get MAYBE a betta fish and some shrimps or something. No goldfish.

Zero. Use your brain, and get a big tank for big fish, and small fish for a small tank. A goldfish, evne when bought at one inch, will grow to the size of your tank.
As for the person who says it "really sucks" to only have one or two fish, then you obviously don't appreciate goldfish. When fish get BIG, one or two are just as valuable if not more htan 20 tiny fish. And they have huge personalities, you can enjoy each of them without cramming four in a 10 gallon -- that is just sick and cruel. What is wrong with you future serial killers?

Follow the one inch per 10 gallons rule. They probably won't die if you put them there, but it will get dirty very quickly and they won't be happy. With a smaller tank, there's also a higher chance of illnesses.

Same answer as before. A 5 g really isn't suitable for goldfish but with lots of care maybe 2 small ones but you'll need to upgrade soon.
