"Cryptonomicon" by Neal Stephenson. It was absolutely fantastic. Even though it's huge, I was sorry when it ended.

It jumps around between WWII and present day, between the Pacific and the Phillipines and Silicon Valley, and involves computers, Japanese military, US Navy, and more. Plus there's a love story and dozens of really terrific asides, like 4 pages on the right way to eat Cap'n Crunch. (Which I agree with completely.)

Try it, and don't let its size be off-putting.

"Ibn al-Haytham: First Scientist" by Bradley Steffens tells the inspiring, true story of a medieval Muslim scholar who overcame bouts of mental illness to develop the scientific method two hundred years before the Europeans learned of it--by reading his books. You can find reviews of the book and read a sample chapter at http://www.ibnalhaytham.net/

A non-fiction book I recently read and enjoyed is The Overachievers: The Secret Life of Driven Kids, by Alexandra Robbins.

A fiction book: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I thought I'd hate it, but it's now one of my favorites. Good luck!
