The number of valence electrons for the Periodic Table columns you ask about mostly correspond to the "ones" digit...which is also why the Periodic Table is organized the way it is.

So, 1A = 1 valence, 2A = 2, 3 = 3, etc, 16A = 6, 17A =7 and 18A = 8. Don't forget that "full" valence is 8, which is why the Noble Gasses are all in column 18A
