How often are you supposed to vacuum your carpet?

In my house we have carpeted floors. How often are we supposed to vacuum? Can you tell how dirty it is?

I have 2 small toddlers AND a long haired dog. I try to vacuum EVERYDAY or at the very least every other day.... If you really want a "shock"... Get yourself some baking soda AND some iodized table salt... Mix in a zip loc bag and sprinkle on carpet... Let it sit overnight and then vacuum.. The baking soda will deodorize your carpet AND the salt will help pick up any loose dirt... You'll be amazed at how dirty the salt/baking soda will be....

Vacuum it every week at minimum. If you don't vacuum, you'll notice it looks a little dirty/dusty in about a month. If you wait too long to vacuum, the dust and dirt can become embedded and not be removed with a vacuum. However, vacuuming too often will damage the fibers in the carpet (so don't do it everyday).

I was a maid at a corporate housing/hotel. You could really tell the people who were staying there for months (and would only play to have the place cleaned once or twice a month) from the rooms where people would only stay one or two days. The carpet looked a lot cleaner in the rooms with a higher turnover, but it looked a lot older (even though it was the same age).

Do you have pets? Do you have lots of company? Are your windows & doors sealed properly? All this has to do with how much your carpets will hold. Humans shed a lot of skin every day, and with that, small critters eat the skin and ,of corse, crap it out out. This is called "dander". Depending on your alergic reaction to this will dictate how often you should vacuum.

at least once a week.. but if it gets dirty it isn't going to hurt to vacuum it... i think also if you have kids or pets its good to shampoo your carpet once a month
