My one year old son normally has a bath at 6.30pm, tea at 7pm then plays for a couple of hours and goes to bed at 9pm.

However tonight, he got really tired and grouchy at around 5.30 and fell asleep on the sofa. I covered him up and put him safe, expecting him to wake up within 30 mins or so.

He's still asleep!

He seems fine (he has been under the weather with a cold though).

Should I wake him up for some tea? He will be a real misery if I do. But I'm worried about putting him in his cot for the night now as he's had no tea, so he'll be waking up with hunger throughout the night!

Sorry - just to clarify -

I'm in the UK. "Tea" over here is also used as a name for light evening meal (as well as the name of a hot drink!)

Its now 7.30, he's been asleep for 2 hours!!!

The reason he goes to bed at 9pm is that if he goes to bed at 7pm he wakes at around 4am!! His normal sleeping pattern is 9pm - 6 or 7am

No need to wake him up. Because when he feels hungry, he'll wake by himself and cry for food. It's by nature that any person wakes up by himself when he's hungry or has to go to restroom.

I have a same problem with my 3 month old son. I would like to put him down at 9 for him to sleep all the way through but he seems to fall asleep around 7 then wakes up around 3 / 4 am - Your problem is if you wake up him will he go back down. Best to leave him for now! He'll probably wake up soon to eat anyway

I guess you should let him sleep, if he has a cold he is most likely tired. He might wake up and eat after a little while, and then you can put him to bed. I guess just leave him where he is and don't worry too much about it.
Oh and my kids go to bed at 9 to, I don't think that's unreasonable, I don't get why everyone has to get on people about having different parenting techniques and styles.
Oh and maybe you could use some vapor rub on him, or a plug in vaporizer it helped my little boy when he had a cold.

Let him sleep. If he's not feeling well, the sleep will do him good. That's when cell building and repair happens. So let him be. If he wakes on his own, and wants tea, then give it to him then. If you are concerned about being bothered with having to make it in the middle of the night, make it now and put it in a thermos and put it in his bedroom. If he wakes, you can pour it in a cup then.

First of all, its your business what time your boy goes to bed. He gets up quite early so whats the problem? My daughters the same age & she goes about the same time or even later sometimes as we couldn't get her into a routine.

For now i'd leave him to sleep, if he does wake earlier than normal, give him a bottle of milk , don't speak & cuddle him up in bed with you so he knows he has to sleep longer.
I havent managed to train my girl to go to bed but i've trained her not to wake up until 8am lol.

Let him sleep. He obviously wants to. I doubt whether he will be malnutritioned before he's next fed. He's a baby 'adult'. They know what they want, when they want. If he wakes during the night, why worry, unless he has a fever and will not feed. I am sure he is fine though. You sound as though you are a very good mum. You will know what is best.

Let him sleep and if he does wake up hungry---give him something light to tide him over for the rest of the evening. If he is sick--then he really doesn't care for the tea right now.

Let him sleep and when he wakes up have a snack, etc ready for him. My daughter usually sleeps a lot more when she is sick and if I don't let her then she ends up more cranky than I can handle. It would be better to have a happier baby that doesn't get to sleep on time this evening than to have a grumpy groggy baby with a full tummy.

Also, I absolutely have to comment on this - I wish I was so lucky that my 1yr old would go to bed as early as 9. We struggle to get ours down by 11, and she still gets up with me to take her sister to school.

If he's getting over being sick, or even if he still is sick, his body needs plenty of rest, so you should let him sleep. If he wakes up, give him his tea when he wakes up. Also, if he is one, I think a 9:00 bed time might be a little late.

Let him sleep. Unless he has a fever or other indication of worsening symptoms, he just needs to do what he's doing...sleep! His body can heal best and fight that infection while sleeping. Just keep the doors open so you can hear him when and if he gets up, and maybe check on him every few hours.
