A Jointer makes the edges of two boards very straight to glue together.
A Planer takes a rough cut board and makes it straight over the face of the lumber.

There is a plane, which has a knife set to trim off the edges. There is a router, which can follow a template or can round-off edges. There is a also a belt sander with a table, which can guide your board past the moving sander belt.
