Theft gives you a sense of power. If you were stealing things you didn't even really want then it was probably the thrill of doing what you liked over the will of society. It gives you a personal sense of power to impose your will on the world despite the rules. If you just stole things you really really wanted then it simply shows a lack of a fully developed sense of morality. That is somewhat normal and just shows that you probably did not have that much fear of punishment.

1. Loose social boundaries.
2. a fear of not having enough
3. hoarding
4. extreme egocentrism and an inability to consider the feelings of other people.

Those are some of the possible reasons, plus immaturity - you were only a child and might not be expected to have consideration for others.
