The watch, if water resistant, should say so somewhere on it and possible give a depth up to which it is resistant. If it has no such label, chances are it is not water resistant.

Only water resistant watches resist water reliably, and they will say "water resistant" or "waterproof" on them somewhere. It has nothing to do with whether or not it uses quartz movements inside, it's all about how well sealed the case is.

On the other hand, my father dropped a cheap Timex in the Mississippi River and found it almost a year later during a drought when the water level dropped. After being underwater for months, he let it set for about a week with the back off so it could dry out. Then he wound it, and it still kept the time acurately. That was about 25 or 30 years ago, and although he doesn't wear it anymore, it is still in working condition.
