It comes from the ancient chinese term "huang chung" which is literally translated as "yellow bell." The huang chung was the base pitch in a 12 tone system of pitches . It is significant because it is the first known tonal system, in which a base pitch was established and subsequent pitches were established at specified intervals from the base.
