I'm so sorry you are going through such a tough time....

I gave birth to my first child 8 weeks ago and had Gestational Diabetes. When you have diabetes, your sugar levels automatically go out of control because of the baby's placenta - it lowers your insulin levels. I had to increase my insulin dosages every week because of changing hormones.

My doctor induced my labor 4 days before my due date - with Diabetes, they will not let you go past your due date; however, 32 weeks is far too early. Your baby's lugs aren't fully developed yet, so you want to keep her in as long as possible. Don't worry, she is not the size of a 3 month old - 5 pounds 8 oz. is totally normal for 32 weeks! She's a little on the big size, so she might weigh 9 pounds when you hit full term, but a lot of people deliver 9 pounds babies!

By following the diabetic diet and taking my insulin, my daughter was born at 7 pounds 1 ounce. Don't let those doctors scare you, you and your baby girl will be just fine! =)

Oh, be sure to ask for non-stress tests once a week (maybe even twice a week). It checks your baby's movements and heart rate, if she passes those tests, then she's doing perfectly in there, and there's no need to induce. If you can keep her in to at least 37 weeks, you'll both be a lot better off!

I have a friend who has diabetes and she has had 2 children now. Her first was born early due to something that had nothing to do with diabetes. The 2nd was full term and was a good size when she was born. During both pregnancies her levels couldnt be controlled and it really freaked her out during the 1st but not so much for the 2nd. She seen her dr every week for the baby and plus other doctors for her diabetes and for her weight gain during the 2nd pregnancy. Having diabetes can cause high and low birth weight and premature birth. As long as you are being carefully watched you should be ok without having to induce. If you could make it to 37 weeks then youd be full term and everything would be good. I think that is you are not having any serious problems with the baby you should try to wait. If you happen to notice that baby is moving so much anymore or other extreme causes for concern then you should go to the doctor right away. If it does cause enough concern right now and your doctor can not comfort you enough to wait then if you request to be induced early they can do that but may not if they do not see fit for the baby. You should talk to your doctor about how you feel and the concerns you have so your doctor knows and can work it out so you both feel more comfortable with the way things are going for you right now. Good Luck!!

32 weeks is too early to volutarily give birth unless you or your child are in serious danger. Your doctor will weight the danger and decide what is best for you and your baby.

Babies of diabetic mothers are bigger, but that doesn't mean that they are strong enough to be living outside the womb. They can't even eat by mouth until 34 weeks. Their lungs are very underdeveloped, they can get brain bleed which can cause developmental issues, and they can not maintain their own body temperature.

Have you visited a nutritionist? You probably will need to adjust your diet. Ask your doctor for a referral to one and they can make sure you get enough for your fetus while mainting your blood sugar. I had a strict diet with my twins and was able to avoid medication by controling it with diet.

At your next prenatal appointment, you need to ask your practitioner about these things. As to the diabitis & c-section, that is a def. possiblity of yes. You said you cant if its like that. Well, thats not true. Its safer to deliver the baby by csection. I'm sure all will be okay if you talk to them about this. Just relax as best you can. (By the way 3 month old babies are not 5 lbs. They are more like 10 to 12lbs. on the average!) So this should relieve you some. As to their guestimates... take a chill pill on that one. They are soooo off on them things all the time. I had one with my now 5 yr. old son. They said he was 8 1/2 lbs. & 5 days later he came out at 10lbs. 7oz.!!! And with my now 9 week old son they said he was 7lbs. 2oz. & when he came out a month later he was only 7lbs. 15oz.! So, as you see from here, they are just GUESStimates!! Not a science! RELAX!!!!

I didn't think that oral diabetes pills were safe in pregnancy ?
What did your doctors say ? I may be wrong.
By now you should see your doctor weekly if not more.
How are your non-stress tests ? Your ultrasound ?
As pregnancy progresses, all women with diabetes need more insulin.
You should be seeing a peri-natal group for your very hi risk pregnancy. I am confused as to who is taking care of you?

Many women with diabetes deliver early.
I wish you the best.

I would at least try to make it until 37 weeks, if you do want to induce. Some times ultrasounds are off when it comes to weight. My doc said my daughter was going to be 6 pounds, she was 7 and a half pounds. I've heard women say their docs say 9 pounds, they have 8 pound babies. Just follow what your OB thinks is best.

You might need an insulin pump. I believe these read your blood sugars and automatically adjust the dose, but check with your endocrinologist on that. You do run the risk of placental abruption due to your blood sugars being out of control, so make sure they are checking that with an ultra sound. I almost lost my son at 29 weeks due to this. I ended up having an emergency c-section.

Oh my goodness, you sound EXACTLY like me! And, my DUE DATE, was the EXACT same as yours! (2007) I gave birth on February 3 2007.
I would speak with your doctor regarding this. I had to have a c-section, after being induced and in labor for 48 hours. My water bag was broken for 20 + hours as well. It was NOT fun at all! My son was 9.6lbs! I was told when they measured me, 3 week earlier that he was 7lbs, 13oz already! I think I was TOTALLY over-due, and they messed up some how on my due date.
As I was saying, talk to you doctor, see what they would advise, due to the diabetes. I personally, DONT think that being Induced is a really good "experience". I was SO excited when I got there to the hospital at 5:00am, and thought that I would not have to really worry about things. But, I went in on a Thursday morning, and then didnt give birth until Saturday! NOT fun! By the time it was time for me to have a C-section, I was so scared. And totally upset. It was NOT in my birth plan, and C-sections are so hard to recover from! Also, here on the island of Kauai where I live, they do not do "V-BAC's". So, from now on, I will always have to HAVE a c-section, and cannot even just TRY for a regular birth. Sadly. Unless I fly to Honolulu, the bigger neighbor island.
I really wasnt prepared for any of this to happen. And didnt even pay attention to C-section part of the birth class, because it WAS NOT an option for me. (Go figure, thats why I HAD to have one). Just be prepared, you will more than likely HAVE to have a C-section being induced with a larger baby. And, if your blood pressure is not good at the time, that can lead to higher chance of a C-section. However, if you are induced, PLEASE get the epidural. You will have it SO hard without it. DONT try to be a HERO! I did. And something to keep in mind, is that your body is NOT producing these contractions NATURALLY, so your chances of dealing with them naturally, is going to be harder. They are not like "real" contractions. They dont start out mild, and get really intense. They just start out at PEAK! So, its really really rough! I had an epidural, becasue my son was giving me really bad back labor. And plus, it probablly didnt help that I was really stressed out, and couldnt relax, since I was so nervous about the baby too!
Hey, are you going to the doctor every week now, or every 2 weeks? I would do this, make an appointment this week to sit and talk about your options, and concerns. DONT feel like the doctors are going to be "mad" of something. They wont, they are used to questions. But, ussually if they are aware of your situation, and know of your condition, they should be monitoring it... To be on the safe side, just go talk to them. PLEASE dont stress out about it. YOU stressing out NOW, will only lead to stress on the baby! Plus, the chances of having a miscarriage now, are really really low. You're much too far along, and if in the event something WERE to happen, and they HAD to go in and get baby Girl, she would be fine. She can survive on her own already, by now. She is only staying inside to gain someone more tissue, and fat... And she will not want to be EVICTED from her comfy "condo" inside you....

I wish you all the BEST luck! Let me know if you have ANY questions, I have a lot of good knowledge, because my labor was ANYTHING that what I planned for!

Take care, and go drink some tea, take a bubble bath and light some christmas candles in the bathroom, and try to RELAX! Dont worry about taking a bath, and its BAD for baby, I took one EVERY night of my 3rd trimester! :)

yes, I believe your doctor may try to induce labor. The risks have to be balanced by the benefits and yes your diabetes can affect your child at birth and after, causing him to possibly have trouble regulating his own sugar levels.

If she's too big, you'll definitely have a c-section.

It's best to keep her in there longer, because of her under developed lungs.

I recommend talking with your doctor about delivering by 38 weeks, and getting the shot that can help her lungs develop more quickly.

Good luck, and speak with your doctor....soon.
