If you are using a built in video card which is connected to the motherboard, you need to install the drivers for it.... If you are using a video card" pci, pci express, agp. then they also need the drivers installed....
Best bet is you need to install the drivers, or update them to the newest ones....

It seems like your video card isn't being recognized by the OS, so it is running in the default VGA mode. If your video card has Win 98 drivers, then you might wish to reinstall them. That should take care of the problem. You are several Windows versions back, and Win 98 hasn't been supported for several years. Finding driver that will work is going to be very difficult if you don't have the video card's install disk or CD. You might be able to get it from the manufacturer or the site in the source.

Right click on your desktop and click again on properties. Here there should be a tab for 'sreen resolution'. Open this and as I suspect you are probably on 800X600 I suggest you go up one step (even two) to say 110X960 or something similar. Then reboot your machine and your desk top should be smaller.
Again right click on your desktop and click again on properties and this time look for a colour tab and see if you can alter the numbers of colour.
Both the number of colours and resolution are a function of your graphic card and its drivers. You may have to update both to achieve what you what.
You may find it easy to use 'safe mode' by pressing F8 after the BIOS splash screen and before windows loads to do the above. (Choose 'Safe Mode' from the dialog box).
Windows is pretty old hat now days and not well supported, it won't offer you the same experience as a later OS

Go to the website for the brand computer you have OR the website to your graphic card (if self-installed) and download the correct Video Graphic drivers for your version of Windows. Then you'll be set.
You may also need to install drivers for your sound card or any other hardware you may have added yourself. If you have recovery discs, then all the needed drivers will be on them or you can find them by inputting your model # at the computer's website. Go to support/Drivers&Downloads :)

your video card didnt get the drivers installed to function properly, if you have the CD for the drivers, hen put it, go to control panel-->add new hardware, the system should start searching for unconfigured hardware, it might ask for drivers, just lead it to the CD and it will do it's job.
if you dont have, then search the internet for the manufacturer and get the drivers.
any dificulties? e-mail me with more info
good luck
