802.11a and 802.11g are different wireless standards. There are four standards: 802.11, 802.11A, 802.11B, and 802.11G

802.11a/g will work on either where as 802.11g will only work on 802.11g and 802.11b networks.

In a nutshell A operates on the 5Ghz band which provides less penetration but also less interference from other devices.
G operates on the 2.4Ghz band which provides more penetration but is also the same frequency that many wireless phones and even microwaves operate at providing more interference.

G is the most widely used standard. Check out this site

Well the a/g card is Dual band. It works on both 2.4 gig and 5.8 gig bands so it gives you more options.

Most Wifi these days is 2.4 or 802.11g but the 802.11a which uses 5.8 is generally a less used and less "cluttered" band.
