two candles "a" is one inch longer than "b"."A" is lite at 3pm, "b" is lite at 5pm. At 9pm both are same lenth, "b" goes out at 10:30pm, "a" goes out at 11:00 pm. How long is candle "a", and how long is candle "b".

The shorter and longer are 11 and 12 inches, respectively.

The shorter one burns 11/5.5 = 2 inches/hour.
The longer one burns at 12/8 = 1.5 inches/hour

At 9 p.m. both will be at 3 inches.
