Investigators say an elderly woman likely died of exposure after the electricity in her northern New Mexico home was cut off. Her frozen body was found Thursday morning in her home..The medical investigator said someone close to the 69 ear old woman even tried to pay the utility bill for her, but the power company would not accept it. knowing the temps would drop well below freezing....
SO is this just business as usual or a case of murder knowing that with her power cut off and no where else to go she would likely die???

It seem to me that if you intentionally create the conditions whereby a person dies because of those conditions, then it looks like murder to me. Many people in America who have no family befall such fates. It is more common than you think...

In some states there are laws stating that
* If the power company is properly notified, then it is illegal to cut off the power to elderly person

This proper notification involves
* who will be paying the bills if the elderly person cannot
* who is to be notified if the bills have not been paid on time
* who is to be notified if the power goes off for other reasons, such as a storm

For example ... bad storm in the area, the power and phones go out to an whole area ... the power company, phone company, etc. provide to the police a list of elderly residents in their customer service who need to be checked up on, because they now lack heat and communications

For this to work, there have to be llaws on the books mandating such behavior, and there has to be notification of the fact that various people qualify for such support.

The power company has no idea what age its customers are unless it is notified well in advance of any problem.

When bills are not paid, there is a process of bills in mail warning that the power will be cut off if money not paid by some deadline.

When money is paid, it takes several days to be processed & it is possible that the order to cut off the power can cross in communication with the late payment

I also know from dealing with a wide range of institutions over my lifetime, that **** happens, human error, breakdowns in communications between people, and proper training of personnel, and everyone doing what they are supposed to do

Family of elderly have a responsibility to check up on their loved ones, make sure they are Ok, because you cannot trust all systems to work perfect all the time.

Some people are just cold hearted! And don't care about no one but them self's! It don't really seem like an answer question! But I think the power company should have been looked into for that if some one offered to pay it for her in they didn't take it!! But there could off been other ways like they could of gave her the money a different way like a money order or something but wait this is Mexico your talk in about!!!!!!

I would imagine this will be blamed on Bush very soon. Evidently this lady was not a member of the lazy class that we taxpayers support. Wait for the global warming hoax to double the cost of electricity. This will happen much more often soon.

Power companies are antiquated government-protected monopolies. You can't have more than one power company serving the same region, so unlike other businesses they have no competition to worry about and thus have no reason to change their business model and can just do as they damn please (much like the phone company and the Post Office was in the "bad old days").

Big busines has no concern about the needy.
They are far to busy being greedy..!!

So the old lady died, well thats one less small customer to have to service, seems to be their attitude. They see this as good business practice not murder. Some of us will be quick to disagree with their attitude..!!
