Your teacher challenges you and your best friend to each pull a pair of scales attached to the ends of a horizontal rope, in tug-of-war fashion, so that the readings on the scales will differ. Can this be done? Explain.

It might be cheating but I think you could have one hand on the scale and the other on the rope. Tug-of-war rules clearly allow the use of both hands! You can then vary the amount of pull from each hand.
