Do you believe they are accepting that responsibility?

I beg to disagree. The media's responsibility is to present the facts without bias. Accuracy is a must. All candidates should be treated alike, although it is true that the leading candidates probably will get the most exposure. Any opinions concerning the campaigns MUST be on the editorial page and not in news stories. It's sad, but some media outlets don't follow these basic rules.

"The media" is just a collection of various business that make money by selling advertising, whether they are newspapers, television or radio stations, or web-based organizations. The ALL have their own "spin", and have no real responsibility in terms of politics & reporting other than obeying the laws of the land.
