what are the top 5 laptop brands?

Having been around with these "brands" for along time, None of these are actually the big players, they just BRAND a laptop and sell it! The major manufacturers are the key to good laptops.

Those won't be on the brand name but are who built the machines.

And someone should tell Simon that HP and Compaq are the exact same company particularly in laptop market!
