its been about 45 minutes and there is still a distinct odor coming from the power unit assembly. this is the shiny 10 gallon 6.5 peak horsepower unit. Model number: qpl650. If I can't fix it where can I buy the power unit assembly alone?

better off to get a new one, motor is burnt, buy a 10 gal wet/dry vac, unit will cost as much or more than the whole thing,

If the motor burnt out, the Shop Vac is history. You may be able to order a new motor from the manufacturer, but most likely the cost of the motor will be close to the cost of a new ShopVac.

If it was me, I would just replace it!!
