The "ruling class" is represented in high government positions far beyond their numbers in society overall, but there are also many examples of people who achieved power who had very humble beginnings. Success in business is less dependent on class, but wealth still is because of inheritance. Since most people in rich countries now grow up healthy and have access to education, sharp class differences have disappeared, but money and contacts still give them advantage.
