The tile will be place above my stove and base counters. All tile will be placed on existing sheetrock walls in my kitchen.

You can tile over sheetrock. It is done all the time. There is no need to replace the sheetrock with another board, unless there are major flaws (holes) in the existing wall!

Not necessarily. Depends on where you are installing the tile and what you are using the tile for, IE. bathroom- tub surround or counter back splash, around fireplace or sink, and if the Sheetrock is in good condition and anchored tightly the moisture is what you need to be aware of. more possibility of water, the more you want to stay away from the Sheetrock. You need to use the green faced( moisture resistant) in any areas that may see water. Whether it is overspray from the sink, or standing water on a counter.

The use of greenboard is a code requirement in most areas.
It is the same as used in bathrooms around showers, tubs, and sinks. In other areas where the tile will be applied over painted surfaces, a surface preperation chemical called Paso should be used.

tile right over it.good luck do a good job don't you watch hgtv they remodel houses all the time watch it some night you get alot of tips from the shows.

you need sheetrock that is cement so it takes on water ok. then tile away.
