By close, I mean within a ten minute walking distance.

While the are not 'close' they are easily accessible from one another. Chinatown has a stop on the Chicago 'El' Red Line train, which will also take you downtown into the loop. From the Red Line in the loop you can switch to the Brown line which takes you around on an elevated level the downtown area. If you're feeling strong you can walk from the Red Line to the Sears Tower or you can take the Brown line to get about 5 blocks closer and walk from there. The Sears Tower is slightly outside of the downtown loop so you'll have to walk anyway. Fares for a one-way ride on the CTA trains are $2.

No, not easily walkable. The Sears tower is on Wacker between Jackson and Adams. This is about 350 W./250 S. on the city's grid. (Contrary to what a previous answerer says, this is most definitely considered part of "the Loop". The boundaries of the Loop are not identical to the elevated train loop around downtown. When Chicagoans talk about the loop, they mean the central business district, which is bounded by the River on the north and west, the Lake on the east, and Congress Parkway on the south.)

Chinatown is at Cermak and Wentworth about 150 W./2200 S. on the city grid, which puts it a little less than three miles away.

The simplest route to Chinatown without a car from there is to walk or take a bus down Jackson St. to State St (about 1/3 mile) and then take the CTA red line to the Cermak/Chinatown stop, which is 1/2 block east of Wentworth.

With a car, the simplest and often the fastest route is to avoid the expressway, and use Jackson to Clark street, and go right on Clark to Cermak. Make a right on Cermak, go under the viaduct and you're there. There's a large parking lot for which many restaurants validate tickets on the north side of Cermak at Wentworth, the entrance is on Wentworth. Street parking in Chinatown is scarce. The lot is your best bet.

A cab will run you about $10 each way.

No. It might take an hour to walk from the Sears Tower to Chinatown. Both places are great but bring money for a bus or cab ride.

No, its not withing walking distance, but there is a great train system. Hop on the red line, going southbound and get off in Chinatown. The train ride will defenetly be under 10 minutes.

Not close enough to walk. If you make it to Chinatown, check out Three Happiness Restaurant. It's my favourite from when I used to live there.
