My 20 year old neice is staying here for the weekend. She left a lighter in her pocket and threw the jeans in the laundry.Luckily I found them, after the wash was done...and before I put them in the dryer. What would have happened if the lighter had made it into the dryer and became hot?I cringe to think...

I have had it happen before, and nothing happened.

Most likely nothing. But the possibility is there that the lighter fluid would have expanded and burst the lighter, BUT there would have be a spark in the dryer (which I guess static electricity could have produced) for anything to ignite. Even if it did ignite (small chance), the tumbling of the clothes would suffocate the fire. Really, nothing would have happened.

I have thrown a pair of jeans, with a lighter in the pocket, into the dryer and completely dried the jeans. Nothing happend. Would not recommend it though.

Most of the time, nothing will happen. The risk of a fire is slight, but more likely the lighter may leak a little and the laundry will smell like lighter fluid...take forever to get that smell out. Sometimes lighter fluid will fade - spot certain fabrics.

I've done it a couple of times. Nothing happens and if you leave the lighter for a while to cool down it should still work.

I have done that many times before. Nothing happens at all. I don't really know why but for some reason it doesn't explode. Maybe because the dryer doesn't get hot enough.

This mishap could of caused a dryer fire to say the least and even caused dents and scratches to the interior drum, and perhaps melted onto the drum walls this is the long and short of it all but most likely irreparable damage

Absolutely nothing, tried it on mythbusters and the only way they could get a lighter to explode was via a naked flame!
