I have wireless broadband and am running Windows XP on my desktop PC with Vista Home Premium on my laptop. I want to be able to share files between the two computers and I'm sure there's a way I can set this up. I just don't know how! Does anyone have an idiot (me) proof guide of what I need to do please?

Yes you must activate File Sharing on both, however it works better if you connect via Firewire.

You'll need to "share" the directory that the files are in. It's not recommended to share more than a directory or two in case of security breach.

Right-click on the folder and get to the Properties. There will be a "Share" option. You can access Microsoft Help (F1) for the details, but be sure you put in a password, or only allow the other computer (by computer name) to access the directory.

Once you have the Share set up, you will be able to browse using My Network Places to set up a connection between the machines and then access the shared directory.

Yes you can
You will need to create a Network between Windows XP and Windows Vista-Right click My Computer and Computer Name -click Change and you will need to restart the computer to allow this happen.
Also you can use Remote Desktop function over the network with IP Address. Start Menu-Run-type cmd- ping computer name. Start Remote Desktop-Enter IP Address-Enter Username and password (other computer) This allow you used your other computer over the network.
You will need device Switch or Router to allow file/folder to share over the network.
File Sharing between two computer
Windows XP and Windows Vista click the file you want to share and right click share and security button and you will see hand under the file/folder.
Hope this works. Good Luck

First, make sure that both of the computers are in the same network group/domain. Under network connections, make sure that both of the computer are in the same group name. Then, just right click files and folders and click sharing and security (or properties, then the sharing tab) and share it. To access it, you can go under Network Places or just type \\ComputerName in a browser.
