Just go to your computer brand's website and input the serial number/model number of your computer and it will tell you the type of memory and HOW MUCH memory your computer can hold. Remember, if you have Dual-channel memory then you want EACH memory chip to be 'identical' in order for it to take full advantage of dual-channel technology. Most computers out in the past 3 years are capable of 2 or 4 gigs but may only have 2 slots, even 32 bit o/s's. Your computer's website will surely tell you.
VERY IMPORTANT: If you open up your computer to remove a memory chip, MAKE SURE you keep ONE HAND touching the metal casing AT ALL TIMES or wear a static band. If you get any static charge on the memory chip, it will disable it from working properly. Also, after inserting new memory, you may have to re-insert it SEVERAL TIMES until it takes smoothly and you notice the difference. :) good luck to ya!

You could just remove the side cover from your computer, then remove the memory and see what type and speed it is. Or you could run a small diagnostic program. There are quite a few. I like cupz. you can download it (free) from http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
When you run this program, give it a few seconds to scan your system. By the way, this software does not need to be installed, it will run right out of it's program folder.

hi jock
with so many different types of memory avalible for p.c,s its vital you get the correct one for your p.c
as getting the wrong memory can cause system crashes and instability,so its so important to get the correct memory
go to http://www.crucial.com/ and run the online memory tool, this will give you a report of the exact memory you need to get for your p.c
this includes type(ddr,ddr2 ect)speed(400mhz,533mhz) and number of pins(168pin,240pin)
using this information you can then go online and purchase the correct memory, and why not go to my local p.c shop(moreton computer center) for your memory....http://www.moretoncomputers.co.uk/online/shopdisplaycategories.asp?id=12&cat=Memory
on ddr and ddr2 modules they are the cheapest i have seen and can be ordered online from anywhere in the country
they also do a very good selection of graphic cards, processors, motherboards and much more
and for your reference 4gb of DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) would cost you just under £60,a real bargain!
any problems let me know
good luck mate !
