You can buy agar from Sigma or Fisher companies. The stuff from scientific companies is expensive, and they may not want to sell it to individuals. An option is to buy kantan from Oriental stores. It is a food grade of agar good for human consumption. It is pure and you can use 15 gm per liter. When my daughter did her science project, I use chicken broth, sugar and agar to make the medium at home.

You don't want agar in a bottle because you'll never get it out. What you want is agarose, the powder form of agar. Just add water and presto! Look in any lab supply store or online at a scientific equipment provider, like Fisher or VWR.
