How about a grocery store gift card for that tight money (AKA flat broke) week after Christmas?

A gas card, or card from a store like Walmart. There are always things a family that size needs, and having a gift card to use would be a big help. You know people like you is what makes this a better place, tell your friend what a great thing they are doing, and all of you have a Merry Christmas

All good ideas so far, the grocery store would be great, super Walmart, the gas card. All very useful.
Another is to think up something to go with it that would be a help for her over the holidays. A big batch of cookies that could go in the freezer, or be devoured immediately. A nice small fruit basket for the present, and bring a box or sack with enough fruit for everybody to have one of each kind.
Find out if the Mom has Xmas stockings for the kids. If she does, then go and buy stuffers: candy canes, apples and oranges, miniature candies, crayons, Hot wheels, etc. If she doesn't, go and buy 11, [Dollar Tree had nice ones for a buck] and stuff them yourself.
One of the things that hits hard over the holidays is having the kids home for a month. Normally, if they are poor, and enrolled in the breakfast/lunch program at school, those two things are free, and provided Monday-Friday. With the holidays, now the family has 10 mouths to feed everyday, for all three meals. I know a box of can goods says "charity" like nothing else can, but I personally would be thrilled if someone lugged a load of cans to my house for me. Big cans of juice, spagetti-os, cans of fruit. You could even theme it, buy nonperishable breakfast for 11: boxes of cereal, toaster pastries, juice, microwave oatmeal, microwave hot chocolate.
Check with your friend about storage issues, are they living in a house with a pantry, or cabinets? or are they living in a cramped apartment?

gas cards are a really good idea. another good way to give some $$ without handing over a check would be a gift card to a grocery store. everyone needs groceries (especially if they have 10 kids!).
not to mention you can get just about anything from a grocery store: food, school supplies, diapers, cleaning products, etc.
(a super wal-mart would be good too of course)

My wife is making gingerbread houses for friends with children, one of these with the voucher would be fun for all of them.
