What do you mean "our side of the river"? I don't see where that means ownership. A border is established using landmarks other then rivers. Montreal is a major Canadian city and it is established on an island in the middle of that river. Of course, during the wars and skirmishes over the years it only make sense that there be a buffer zone around such a major Canadian city/landmark therefore the border was drawn south of the river. And you are right, it's connected to the Atlantic Ocean but it certainly isn't part of the ocean. The water flows out to the ocean from the St. Lawrence River and is fresh water for the most part therefore it is not part of the ocean, it is the St. Lawrence River.
