Set the age of the boy to be x. Then the age of the girl is x - 3.
x(x - 3) = 238
x^2 - 3x = 238
x^2 - 3x - 238 = 0
When you factor, you get:
(x - 17)(x + 14) = 0 so x = 17 or -14
An age cannot be negative, so you know the boy is 17 years old, and the girl is 3 years younger than that, which makes her 14.

Let the girl's age be x yrs
Let the boy's age be y yrs
y - x = 3======> y = 3 + x
xy = 238
x(3 + x) = 238
x^2 + 3x - 238 = 0
x^2 + 17x - 14x - 238 = 0
x(x + 17) - 14(x + 17) = 0
(x - 14)(x + 17) = 0
x = 14 or x = -17
Since we are concerned with age the girl's age is: 14yrs.
The boy's age is 3 + 14 = 17yrs.

You begin by letting
x ----be the age of the boy
y ----be the age of the girl
x - y = 3 -----eqn 1
x * y = 238 -----eqn 2
substitute eqn 2 in 1:
x - (238/x) = 3
x^2 - 238 = 3x
x^2 - 3x - 238 = 0
factors are
(x - 17) (x +14) = 0
x = 17 years ; x = -14 then substitute x =17 in eqn 2
y = 238/17 = 14 years

Let B be the age of the boy and G the age of the girl.
G = B - 3
GB = 238
Substituting...
( B - 3 ) B = 238
B² - 3B = 238
B² - 3B - 238 = 0
( B + 14 ) ( B - 17 ) = 0
So the boy is 17 and the girl is 14.

Let the boys age=x
so the girls age=x-3
& x(x-3)=238
or x^2-3x-238=0
find two nos whose sum =-3 & product=-238
or x^2-17x+14x-238=0
orx(x-17)+14(x-17)=0
or (x-17)(x+14)=0
so x=17 as x=-14(NOT POSSIBLE)
or x-3=14,so 14 & 17 yrs ans

Let the age of the girl be x years.
Hence the age of the boy = 3 yrs more than that of the girl. ie his age = (x + 3) yrs.
If now the product of their age is 238, means -
x ( x+ 3 ) = 238
=> x^2 + 3x - 238 = 0
=> x^2 + 17 x - 14 x - 238 = 0
=> x ( x + 17 ) - 14 ( x + 17 ) = 0
=> ( x - 14 ) ( x + 17 ) = 0
=> x = 14 or x = (-) 17
But since age cannot be -ve we have x = 14 yrs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer
Hence the age of the girl = 14 yrs and that of the boy = 14 +3 = 17 yrs.

let x be the boy's age.
the girl's age is the (x-3).
x(x-3)=238
x^2-3x = 238
x^2-3x-238=0
(x-17)(x+14)=0
So, the boy's age is either 17 or -14. No negative ages allowed, so the boy is 17. The girl is 14.

I'm marrying a man 3.5 years younger than me. I will be 27 and he will be 23 for the wedding. When I was 23, I would have had reservations about marrying a boy 3 years younger as 20 is fairly young still. Also, if you're still referring to yourself as a boy, it might be helpful to mature a little before deciding to marry. The problem might be with overall age than age difference.
