I see plenty of them here. Just the other day I had to run outside and scare them away from the pink flamingos. It was a murder! lol

My daughter used to live in the Sonoma Cal area, and I visited quite often. There were ravens all over up there, in fact I have a few feathers that they lost. According to my field guide, they are native to the whole west, and all across Canada and down into Mexico. They like heavy timber, and where I saw them was mostly in the mountains in Sonoma County, where my daughter lived, and they were in her yard. They are so big, almost 2ft long, that when you see them fly sometimes you can mistake them for hawks, until you hear them croak.
There are also some in the Appalachians but rarely.
A white-necked raven is found near the Mexican border.
EDIT: You probably just don't see them in the city since they are not a city bird. Take a trip out into the mountains.

Ravens are really prolific in Washington state...and we also have them in Virginia, along with their distant cousins, the pesky crow.
Did you know that they don't migrate? Although they wander at times.
Ravens tend to keep away from concentrations of people, but can live in many habitats. Found in boreal forests and mountainous regions of the west, they also inhabit arid grasslands, tundra, riverbanks, and coastal areas near seabird colonies. Ravens were historically widespread on the Great Plains when bison were common.
They live in Australia and Canada too!
Did you know the raven is one of the biggest mimics of other bird calls?..
California? Maybe they don't like suntan oil and sand?...or maybe they don't like seagulls! lol Quote the raven "Nevermore"!

Wally, this is the easy way to remember. Have answered this question before on answers and am a birdwatcher as well. Ravens=west of the Continental Divide. Crows= East of the Continental Divide.

Hi Wally - no I do not think so. Ravens (I believe) reside in England - specifically at the palaces. They are huge black birds or giant crows. Usually they are the size of a chicken. The old saying goes that if the Ravens leave the Tower of London - the beefeaters will die! (The beefeaters are the men in (ancient) uniform who guard the "Bloody Tower" - CJ
BTW - Horses, deer, hippos and now RAVENS?? Did you run away to the circus??????????????

Yes, there are ravens in many areas of not just USA, but throughout much of North America. I've seen them in Canada, but a friend commented on seeing them in upper state New York recently. Here is some information about ravens:

Well Wally I was pretty sure there were Ravens here. Not the Baltimore Ravens, but the birds. I didn't know where so I looked it up. Yes, there are Ravens all over the US. They are among natures smartest birds. They don't call me Curious for nothing.

We've got plenty of them in Arizona.
I thought they were crows, but they're not. Ravens are bigger and I just recently found out that a ravens eye is completely black, so is the skin surrounding the eye. Crows don't have that.
so maybe the crows at your house are actually ravens.

The common, or northern raven, is found in most of the US, including California, except for the South East.

From what I know, there are no true ravens in the US ... just those annoying crows! Who knows, maybe it has something to do with that whole "nevermore!" thing. People here have been known to "eat crow", but I've never heard of anyone "eat ing raven."
Edit: Not "here" as in Seniors, "here" as in the US.
