It depends on the seeds. Some will sprout in two or three days, like beans. You can put morning glory seeds in very hot water, and let them sit overnight in a small container, and they will be sprouted. Some seeds take months to sprout, and must go through a cold period (like winter) before they will sprout. Some must go through fire.

If you just want to experiment, get some seeds like radishes, corn, beans, peas or lettuce and put them between wet paper towels in a warm spot, keep them moist, and check them in a few days. They should be sprouted, you will be able to tell because the seed will be split and you will see the new first leaves start to poke out. They will be very pale green, almost white.

The quickest sprouting will be the beans. Let them soak overnight then plant in moist soil and cover with a piece of plastic wrap, make it like a tee pee for grow room. Don't plant it deep just barely cover it with soil and pat it down to stick to the dirt. It should pop up in 3 or 4 days. ( thats when you remove the plastic wrap) The first leaves on it are not actually the leaves the next set will be the first true leaves. That is when you can transplant to larger pot.

it takes about 3 - 4 days for a seed to sprout..
when it sprouts, the seed cover or the "testa" of the seed is cracked open to see the growth of the "plumule" (stem) and the "radicle" (root)
