I prefer to use the debit card only when i really have to, i don't tend to abuse the fact that i have it. however, it can get tempting.

Study after study after study, says cash is harder to part with than plastic debit/check cards.

Psychologically, handing your card over to a teller and getting it back in the same exact physical state leads to higher spending, than taking cash and loosing it. I have noticed that when I have both - some cash and check card on me - I will hand over my check card just to keep my cash... PRETTY STUPID - its all money.

Leave the check card home and carry cash. Go grocery shopping with cash and limit yourself to say 50 dollars. Time yourself. Go back next week and do it with your check card. Odds are you will go over with the check card and finish shopping much faster. When cash is involved you make a better effort to get the best deal ..

I'm not sure exactly what you are looking for here.. Are you comparing it to credit cards? or cash?

You definitely save more money with a debit card than a credit card, because you don't have to pay any fees whatsoever. People also are a little less inclined to use their debit card as often as a credit card, because the debit takes it out of their account immediately, so the price is more important in their minds.

However, cash and debit cards could go either way. Some people spend cash whenever they have it but don't like to use their card as often, and some are the complete opposite. Since there are no fees associated with a debit card it really doesn't matter which of the two you use.

You spend more because the cash is not actually coming out of your pocket. I stopped using them and only pay in cash...I give myself a certain amount of money for the week and when I run out of cash then I don't buy anything...with a debit card as long as the money is in the bank you can overspend. It is good to have in case of emergency though.

I think that having funds on your Account(Debit), would make think just that bit more about foolish spending. The fact that you all ready have funds on your account will also make you think a bit more care full about spending your own money.
