I would recommend the cd set "Sam Cooke's SAR Redords Story" The first cd includes wonderful gospel music by the Soul Stirrers(of which Cooke was once a member as well as Johnny Taylor), the Womack Brothers(Bobby went on to a successful solo career)and R.H. Harris & His Gospel Paraders. Some of the selections were later rewritten as secular songs so one can hear the connection between gospel music and soul music.

The second cd is a marvelous collection of spngs by early soul music pioneers such as Sam Cooke, Mel Carter, Johnny Taylor, the Simms Twins, the Valentinos, Billy Preston, Johnnie Morisette, etc. Even these more secular songs are inspirational to listen to.

Another recommendation would be Aretha Franklin's "Amazing Grace" album. Here's the review from the American Music Guide:

"Aretha Franklin disproved the notion that once you leave the church, you can't go back. She returned in triumph on this 1972 double album, making what might be her greatest release ever in any style. Her voice was chilling, making it seem as if God and the angels were conducting a service alongside Franklin, Rev. James Cleveland, the Southern California Community Choir, and everyone else in attendance. Her versions of "How I Got Over" and "You've Got a Friend" are legendary."

Hope this helps!
