so i have to write a persuasive 'speech' if you will, about a controversial issue. i choose to do plastic/cosmetic surgery among women, and how it perpetuates the idea of women as sex symbols when they get bigger boobs or thicker lips or all of these things. do you think this is good to write about? i need to back it up with statistics, but i haven't found any that i think relate on google, what would be some pros/cons of getting these surgeries.

by the way, i mean surgery for purely aesthetic reasons. not for anything related to health beacuse that's completely different.

people really do seem to be devided on the subject, either in total favor or completely against. interesting.

what i would like to know is if an individual drastically alters their appearence say with rhinoplasty or jaw implants are they obliged to tell a perspective mate. should they have a disclaimer tattooed on their *** that reads "caution, may produce ugly offspring". i know it sounds harsh, but think about it. i feel it has ethical merit.

Does paying $100,000 to get a PHD In liberal arts perpetuate the idea of the intellect as a symbol?

The concept in psychological terms is why so many of us want to be more than we are naturally.

What, exactly, is the purpose of looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger?

What is WRONG with looking like Kramer

Why is the show Ugly Betty so popular

Why does Cinderalla have to have a glass slipper and coach

Why does every 13 year old want to be on the Hannah Montana show?

Why do all the 14 year olds in the theater and acting section want to be famous?

Stop looking at symptoms of a disease far more extenstive than meets the eye.

I found what I think are some relevant statistics at the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic surgery (http://www.surgery.org/press/statistics-2006.php) but I think the flow of your argument is a little flawed. I think plastic surgery is typically thought more of as a symptom than the disease itself, that the preexisting destructive body issues we have lead us to mutilate ourselves for the sake of bigger boobs or thicker lips and not the other way around.

i wrote a similar paper my freshman year of college. i took an ad out of a paper and used the imagery in it when explaining how inescapable plastic surgery is.

i would mention the really odd surgeries out there now, like vagina "make-overs" and anal "bleaching". why would anyone care about those things?

look at why women and men consider surgery. AND no argument is sound without discussing some positive reasons for plastic surgery. for example, boosting a mom's confidence after having babies, people who facial deformities, cleft palates, etc...

That's a good topic, albeit somewhat unoriginal. You might want to consider writing about something more specific, i.e. what is the effect of the availability of plastic surgery on young women (between ages of 18-24) and teen girls?

Narrowing your topic how about one of these:

Teens, those less than 18 getting: 1. breast augmentations, 2. gastric bypass surgery.

Both of these are quite controversial issues.

If you want to be controversial about surgery then maybe women who get implants solely to promote their careers in the sex industry.
I have met a number of prostitutes who had implants just to increase their earnings.

I have always been against plastic/cos surgery, but since age has crept up very quickly on me I am thinking seriously about having the bags under my eyes done and a bit of botox in my lips. This is only because I am feeling my age and looking it and it really is depressing me, I am very active for my age, but my face is really aging.

Check The BBC website.
Louis Thereux did an amazing documentary on this.
He visited L.A and interviewed several top plastic surgeons and interviewed their clients.
Totally compulsive viewing.
You should be able to download this documentary and I know it will enhance your paper.
Good luck.
Kate.

Write it about the huge rise of plastic surgery among men. Much more interesting and controversial. Be prepared for negative feedback from male peers because it challenges the image many men like to maintain about themselves.
