Chemical indicators are useful for visually detecting when a chemical reaction has reached completion. They are used in the process of titration to determine the strength of an unknown solution by measuring the amount of a known solution required to completely react with it.

Using acid - base reactions as an example.

Indicitators change colors when the reaction (titration) is completed and the substances change from acid to base or vica versa.
