I would recommend you to use: Flashget or Free Download Manager. I also recommend you to use Google Web Accelerator to increase your web browsing speed.

Download accelerators are all scams. Sorry. If you have DSL, you should be getting about 1/8th of your advertised speed for downloads. If you're not, then you may need to contact your ISP to see if there are any issues in your area... perhaps you needs your phone line tested. They can typically do this from their office. If there are issues in your home, you may need to replace your phone lines. Are you using a telephone line that is split off of your home phone? If so, try removing the split, and have a dedicated phone line to the DSL router. Bottom line, if you aren't getting what you're paying for, call the company.

Are the speeds you are seeing occurring when you download a file (say an update from MS) or when you are downloading on a P2P client like U Torrent?
P2P downloads are a different animal from a file download or FTP file transfer.
If it's files - your broadband ISP has a problem - call and complain. They are not delivering the service they promised
If it's P2P, then check the FAQs for your P2P software to see if your configuration is correct. The chances are you have a router and it is not configured, or you have Comcast (see the news), and they are slowing you down.

Step 1 : Check internet connection.
Close all other web application, point browser at www.speedtest.net
IF that tests OK, meybe you're just downloading off a poor site

IF "download" = torrents, make sure you configure your torrent client and router right for port forwarding
