You have to perform a "secure delete" to remove information permanently. This is the only real way to erase information off of magnetic media. This works by encrypting the data and deleting it many times over until its nothing more than unreadable code. Shredding is another technique but not nearly as effective. Also. The US Dept of Defense endorse "secure delete" as the only way to permanently remove data. Check out this link.

you only delete the cookies, a good recovery program can locate all the porn or x-rated sites on your computer. The only true way to rid your hard drive of all that stuff is to format the hard drives and start all over again. Don't do this unless you know what you are doing or you will screw-up your computer

There's no reason to worry if you delete the cookies. Yes, things can be recovered, but you really have to know what you're doing. Just take a laptop and you won't have to use someone else's computer! If you're not doing something sketchy, why would someone go to the trouble of tracking you in any way but the easiest?

If you want to make sure the files cannot be recovered, but you don't want to wipe out someone else's computer, you can install the Eraser program and wipe the free space on the computer. That will make the files unrecoverable.

The websites do not go anywhere just the matter the website stored temporarily on your computer is deleted

the cookies are gone from the temp file but with recovery programs, it will still pull up every site and pic that's ever been on your computer. they are still somewhere.
