Good question.
For many, animals are an extension of their humanity. animals, who have always been seen as helpless, at least the domesticated ones, are given human qualities by their owners. I think its precisely because they cannot communicate verbally that we give them such great importance.
For instance, when you arrive home, and your dog is there at the door, displaying what we call a doggie smile and wagging his tail.we automatically think that they are happy to see us. We assign human values to animals actions, and by doing so, we gain a sense of happiness, comfort from that pet.
A look through history shows us that man has always been a contentious species....its exhausting to be out among people, having to communicate, be always "on". With animals, we don't need to do that. Petting them relieves stress, cuddling your cat brings peace. It's only natural that we see them as special.

well are they special to us? and if they are in what way? I mean if you asked Mcdonalds if they thought animals were special they would say yes, of course, because they make them billions of pounds. The chinese and the fur trade is something for you to look at if you think that the majority of the world see animals as being special to us. I dont agree with all that animal cruelty etc but i'm not exactly an animal lover. You must really love animals if you'd post a question like that. I take it your a vegan and dont wear leather or anything of that kind? How many of us say we love animals and they are special but would actually pay extra to have leather seats in their car or a leather settee for example? I think you'll probably find that not many ppl do really think animals are that special if you think about it. dont forget to have a look at the chinese fur trade on you tube. peace out home boi!

I think animals mean so much to us because they give us a completely unjudgemental love. No matter what, your dog will love you. You see animals on TV and in everyday life that get treated like **** by their owner, but no matter what, the dog loves his owner and would do anything to try to make them happy.
Deep down, everyone wants that (most everyone anyway). That's just my opinion anyway.
If animals could talk, assuming they kept the same mindframe...I think they would be even more special to people because then not only would they show you they love you...they'd tell you as well.
Now...if they had human personalities, we'd probably think of them like we do of other humans...how ever that may be.

Because they "need" us, they rely on us and offer unconditional affection. They don't argue with you or cause you to feel bad about yourself. They forgive you. They can be so loyal and make you laugh! In many ways they are like children, totally stupid and dumb! But vulnerable and needy. Most animals (those owned as pets anyway) are so submissive as well.

Animals also have emotions just like us.They can think, act and express their feelings thru their actions.According to Feng Shui they help generate positive energy.Even Vedic Astrology reccomends keeping animals to ward off negative planetary affects.

There are no evolutionary divides. There is spectrum. We carry the genes of our ancestors and many of them are also around us. The living are cousins of varying degrees and so we recognize our traits in their behavior.
The real reason is that fur feels good to touch.

Because deep down we know we are related to them. We are a type of animal afterall. It would be cool if they could talk because we would feel even closer to them.

people think animals need their protection. while having a pet, we get a chance to feel loved, needed and important. it's egoism, my friends.
