They work better for walking upright on the ground. Monkeys walk on all four. Even when in the trees they walk on top of branches using hands and feet to hang on to the limbs. Thus, they need their "big toes" to be more thumblike.

As apes evolved (of which humans are one of 5), their feet began to change. Apes don't walk on top of branches like monkeys do. They swing from them Tarzan style. Humans went one step farther when they began to walk upright on the open spaces outside the jungles.
