People used to give gifts of food to one another at this time of year; when the nights were short and supplies were even shorter they used to go round each others houses and swap food items from their storehouse mid-winter.

The 3 kings brought gifts to Jesus' birth. Led by the North star.

We Three Kings"

We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star

Born a baby on Bethlehem's plain
Gold we bring to crown Him again
King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to rein

Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

Frankincense to offer have I
Incense owns a Deity nigh
Pray'r and praising, all men raising
Worship Him, God most high

Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

Heaven sings hallelujah

Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume
Breathes of life of gathering gloom
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb

Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light

Gift giving on this date was practiced long before Jesus was around, from the holiday of Yule, Saturnalia, the celebration of another "crucified savior born of a virgin" (Mithra), and more.
