This time of year it's snowy and overcast a lot of the time on the Japan sea side. On the Pacific side you tend to get the same sort of dry and sunny days Kanto gets in the winter, except colder. Up in the mountains they are buried in snow. It never gets very cold in Tohoku, maybe minus ten celcius is a really cold night.
