Many types of finish are called "varnish". Urethane is a synthetic " varnish " Urethanes are typically clear with little or no color. Old fashioned varnish like my favorite, McCloskey's have a slight yellow tint. These are Tung oil or boiled Linseed oil based. You really should not use two different types, some are completely incompatible and will look and perform terrible. ( terribly? )

No, don't use them together - they are different formulations. The results will stink. Which you use depends on the purpose of the wood. Both are pretty water resistant but the 'thane family is generally stronger. If the wood is expected to get really wet, I prefer tung oil because it penetrates and fills the first layer of wood cells. NO water will bother the wood.

If they are both oil base you can mix then together or apply one over the other. No manufacturer will approve of this but you can get away with it. If both are water based it will work, too. Don't mix water base with oil base .
