Red blood cells AKA erythrocytes carry oxygen from lungs to tissue by way of hemoglobin(an iron-containing prosthrtic group, heme with a protien, globin). Red blood cells are stored in the spleen it acts as a reservoir for blood system and releases more when needed say as in hemorrhage or shock.Average life span 110 to 120 days.Old red blood cells are ingested by macrophages in the spleen&liver. The iron transported by plasma protien(transferrin )to the bone marrow where it is transformed into new RBC.The heme group is converts into bilirubin(a bile pigment secreted by the liver).Hope this helps you out a little!!!
