Year 2008 is the next leap year, with 29 days in February. February 2008 has five Fridays - it starts and ends on a Friday. Between 1904 and 2096, leap years with same day of week for each date repeat every 28 years which means that the last time February had 5 Fridays was in 1980 and next time will be in 2036.
What is a leap year?
A leap year is a year with one extra day inserted into February, the leap year is 366 days with 29 days in February as opposed to the normal 28 days. (There are a few past exceptions to this)
Which years are leap years?
In the Gregorian calendar, which is the calendar used by most modern countries, the following rules decide which years are leap years:

Every year divisible by 4 is a leap year.
But every year divisible by 100 is NOT a leap year
Unless the year is also divisible by 400, then it is still a leap year.
This means that year 1800, 1900, 2100, 2200, 2300 and 2500 are NOT leap years, while year 2000 and 2400 are leap years.

This actually means year 2000 is kind of special, as it is the first time the third rule is used in many parts of the world.

In the old Julian Calendar, there was only one rule: Every year divisible by 4 is a leap year. This calendar was used before the Gregorian calendar was adopted.

Because the rotation of the earth is not exactly 24 hours, and the revolution of the earth around the sun is not exactly 365 days (it's 365.25 days). As a result, the leap year has one extra day for the calendar to catch up with the proper orbit, otherwise the seasons would slowly move earlier in the year over time.

Why February? I'm not positive, but since February is only 28 days, it would be better to add the extra day to that month rather than give another month 32 days.

Earth takes 3651/4 days to complete 1 revolution .just because this 1/4 is remaining,these r added every 4yrs 1/4+1/4+1/4+1/4=4/4=1 and this i day is added to 1yr
u can know whether a year is a leap year or not by dividing it by 4.if its divisible then it is a leap yr if not normal year .the coming year 2008 is a leap year. so february has 29 days in a leap year.some people who r born on february 29 can celebrate their b'day only once in 4 yrs

The mean time between one revolution is about 365.2422 days long. Using a calendar with 365 days would result in an error of 0.2422 days or almost 6 hours per year.
By adding leap years approximately every 4th year, this difference can be corrected.

This leap year comes every 4 years.

There are other rules that apply also.

You do have Leap second where one second is added to the clock.

This is required to keep English calender in sync with Solar year, which is approximately 365 and 1/4 day long.

Every 4th year is a leap year.
Every century ear is not a leap year.
But every 4th century year is a leap year.

Example 2008 can be divided by 4 to give whole No. so it will be a leap year.

1900 was not a leap year but 2000 was a leap year.

Few years ago we did add a leap second also.

Egyptian calender has only 360 days.

Parsi,calender has 365 days, were adding one whole month at the end of 120, years. but practise was dropped.

Hindu calender add and subtract days to the last month call it "Adhic Mash" or Sangh-u mash, by the way "Mash means month. The basic calender is Lunar but they adjust it to keep in sync with solar reference frame.

Muslim or Islamic year is strictly Lunar base year.

Foot note:

Seasons are Solar based.

Crops are grown base on season so it is a must to keep track of the season, so most farmer use solar calender for this purpose.

To correct some errors that occurs every year and accumulates to almost a day(i.e, 24 hours). This happens due to total time taken to complete orbit around the Sun by our planet is not exactly 365 days every year.Some error still remains.That is corrected through a leap year once every 4 years. even then, it is not fully corrected.That's why further correction is done once in every 400 years.
