Futon is a good bet - doubles as a bed (something most sofas don't do very well).
Be careful with free furniture from the side of the street, if you go that route - there are some really nasty bugs (i.e. bedbugs) which have a tendency to hitch rides on furniture.

Try craigs list, generally you can get pretty new furniture or new and pay like half the price.
