I have a 2001 Chevy Cavalier. The front left wheel has begun making a single soft pop when turning left, braking quickly, and by going over something like a speedbump. How can I truly determine if the issue is a balljoint OR a cv joint issue??

It is true that a CV joint clicks when the wheel is turned tightly.

Take care of it promptly the longer it goes the higher the price.

You need to raise the vehicle make sure you secure so it does not fall on you or rolls well with the safety aspect out of the way. Looking at the wheel grab it as if you where grabbing he steering wheel now push and pull if your wheel feels loose or kind of has a wobble is your bolt joint. If the wheel does not even move your bolt joint is ok. In any case you can visually check if your bolt joint is riped or the boot on your CV(front drive shaft) is riped you might need to add oil to your CV and get a new boot. Your bolt joint will need to be replaced there are no patch fixes for a bolt joint is dangerous not to replace it if is damaged. Should not cost you too much under 40 for the part and is fairly easy to do might take you 4 hours if is your fist time but for a pro should not take more than 1 hour. The CV(front drive shaft) if is only the boot the same thing but for these one I would recommend getting a diagnosis from a shop since is a crucial part of the drive line and some times but very rarely the teeth brake on them and can cause transmission damage if not tended to. The way to find out requires you to take the wheel out and spin the CV(front drive shaft) back and forth you will feel it if it has broken teeth it would want to skip but the other teeth wont let it but is easy to tell........GOOD LUCK........

a balljoint or upper strut mount will make a noise, "thump", when going over a bump or turning the wheel hard while the car is moveing, a worn C/V joint makes a continual clicking sound while turning hard and moveing at the same time, also check to make sure a sway bar link has'nt brocken, very common, as well, look at the lower control arm bushings, these models had a problem with the rear bushing comeing out of the control arm, allowing it to rest on the engine cradle, which also would make a noise when turning.

could be an upper strut bushing, bearing hub, maybe a tie rod end.worked on these cars for years....not too many had ball joint concerns.check caliper bolts and pad thickness.brake pad could be moving around. in the past i have tried spraying penetrating fluid at the opening of the strut tower under the hood where the strut comes through the hood-getting lube to he upper bushing. also jack left front wheel up at the lower arm,to see if there is any movement at the wheel bearing. good luck... cv joints will "pop pop pop pop" in a sharp turn. the other problem could be the ball joint or a front strut. try pushing down on the front and listen to the strut(shock).

If you can get under your car look to see a rubber covering "boot" inspect those for cracks where things could get into the joint. Go from there.

Take it in to a garage or shop you can trust. Usually they will inspect it for you for free.
It does sound like a strut.
