i had a idea where i can take my router and hook it up to a lager antenna and this would allow me to hook a computer up to my car so it can be use as an anti theft system. the only thing is that a wirless router can only go as far as a couple of blocks. would there be a lot of power to get the gain i want?? would i have to use a too large antenna? thanks a lot!!!!!

The gain and size of the antenna will increase the range BUT only for LINE OF SIGHT connection. So the minute your car goes behind a building (between your car and the router) you will loose the signal! That might even be at 100 feet! So although its a nice idea, it won't work.

Get lojack etc.

Your answer is GPS and your cell phone. For these you do require quite a bit of knowledge but is the best and most secure way to do it. With having a router you would have to specify a specific port that would not change from one location to the next if you were able to accomplish the antenna idea that is(you would need to maintain the same frequency and prevent outside interruption). Here is how yo would do it with a cell phone use one with blue tooth technology hook up the blue tooth device to your ignition and alarm. hook up the alert from the alarm to your dialer on the blue tooth. your blue tooth will dial out from your cell phone to your other cell phone or your home also since your phone would have gps you would be able to alert the authorities where your vehicle is at all times.... Sounds simple but is a bit complicated, It can be done for sure but you do need some help....Simples thing to do is get a system with all of it included minus the GPS they will bring those int he future because otherwise they would not have anything else to sell...also they want high profits saying this new feature bla bla....bla... when is already possible for fraction of the price they will charge you....GOOD LUCK...excellent project have fun with it and if you have success email me.....

initially, instantaneous does have a limited selection of roughly 300ft generally, greater or much less. There are extreme income antennas you are able to replace the production facility antennas with. something with 6-12dB income could probable be sufficient. Now the area you do no longer choose to hearken to- I used to have Linksys instantaneous G and had no longer something yet issues - this develop into better than an remoted incident with and with better than one piece of equipment. And it develop into purely with instantaneous - the no longer complication-free under pressure out stuff develop into high-quality. yet that develop right into a while in the past so possibly its greater perfect now. I switched to Netgear and have been very happy with it. jointly as I wasn't extremely concentrated on sign potential on the time, I did be conscious an progression from approximately 50-60% with the Linksys to approximately 80%-ninety% with the Netgear.

They do offer larger antennas, you might do better to move your router to a higher spot in your house away from any other electronic device. You will find your range is better then.

Nice idea, but it would be easier to hardwire a cheap cell phone permanently on into your car and use one of those web sites that allow you to track what cell your phone is currently in on a map. To get the kind of power you'd need for your router idea you'd need to take a couple of microwave ovens to bits.

i think you actually can. for example on some model of linksys router you can get high gain antennas. see: http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-High-Antenna-Connectors-HGA7T/dp/B0002F3G7M

i've never tried them but they are out there. i've heard you can even build your own yagi wifi antenna.
