My 4-month old is currently on anti-biotics since she had an operation not long ago.

The anti-biotics are in a syrup form, and need to be given to her through a syringe.

However, everytime I give it to her, she spits in straight back out! I know how important it is that she swallows every bit of it, so I've tried everything from giving it to her slowly, and have even tried rubbing her throat at the same time so that she swallows it - but nothing works!

Help! What do I do? I dont want to overdose her by giving her the medication twice, so - Im clueless!?

You really need to put the syringe on one side of her mouth and all the way back to her throat, but do it very quickly.

I know it's hard but that's the best way.

Good Luck..xo

Hope she gets well soon!!! :)

I used to have the same problem..just measure it into the syringe and then squirt the medicine into something that she really likes and mix it up a little bit. Is she eating baby food fruits or cereals yet? That would be perfect. If not, just mix it in with some juice or formula or breast milk in her bottle..just dont fill the bottle as much as you normally do in case her appetite has decreased due to illness because she might not take it all. Just enough to mix the medicine in so the taste is not so prominent. Otherwise, you will have to hold her mouth gently while you squirt the medicine into the back of her mouth quickly. It isn't cruel even though she will make a face..it's just something that has to be done. I hope this helps you and I hope your little one is better really soon!

The way I always got my babies to take bad tasting medicine is lay the baby on your lap, head on knees, so the babies head is tilted back just slightly. Put the syringe in the corner of her mouth, and as far back in her mouth as possible. Squirt it all in quickly then blow in her face. It won't hurt her, although she will find it a little unpleasant, but it will induce a natural swallowing action. If the amount of medicine you have to give her is more than a mouthful, then give her 1/2 or 1/4 of it at a time and repeat the process.

Diluting it with breastmilk or formula can sometimes be bad as if she does not finish the milk that means she has not finished her medication. I would go with the first answer and put the syringe to the side of her mouth so it is inside and squirt it in. I don't know if you can try perhaps holding her mouth shut. You could try what they suggest when a baby is not sucking and stimulate her sucking reflex by gently massaging her under chin. Hope this help, it is so horrible when you know that they need it and they don't want it. Don't give her any sweets or cordial she is too young, any child is really too young for such things.

Either shoot it down her throat real fast or give her a bottle or sippy cup with milk in it whether it be breast milk or formula and mix it in.
or the other thing i found that worked was just put it in the teat of a bottle and give it too baby. natural sucking reflex will kick in

Edit: the other thing I remember being told is lay her on her back on lour lap and let her head go down between your knees (of course supporting her) then syringe the medicine in and sit her up straight away and by rights the medicine should roll down her throat.
I never actually ended up doing this so I dont know how effective it is,

I used "the medicator" made by munchkin that has a screw on nipple. I bought two of them, put half the medicine in each container and diluted it with water. You might try that and see if it works. You might even dilute it with juice if she doesn't like the other. I hope that helps.

If you continue to struggle, go back to the pharmacy and ask if they have the antibiotic in a different brand. If so, it may be a different flavour and she may like it.
My daughter refused to take panadol and I finally discovered that it was the cherry flavour she didn't like. She happily takes orange flavoured panadol and gets excited if she sees the syringe.

Try mixing it with a little water or juice to dilute it. I STILL have to do this with my 22 month old daughter, even when it's just panadol.lol. I hope your daughter is doing good after her operation. Good luck
