It has a lot of vain, derogatory, condescending, racist, and sexist lyrics as well as images. I'm aware not all rap is like this, but the greater portion (at least the most marketed portion) seems to be.

Edit: I'm beating you, Paladin. :)

Well much of today's rap music sucks. The mainstream aspect has gotten too controlled by corporate companies that the art form doesn't have the chance to be creative and live outside of the box like it once did. Even if we went back just 5-10 years the expressive side of it was so much brighter than it is today. Rap was supposed to be a voice for a people who didn't have the ability to speak on a grand scale.. now that we have that chance to speak the majority of what's being said is about cars, money, girls. Very few are talking about the issues in the community... R.I.P. Tupac Shakur!

Why do people hate Punk Rock? Why do people hate Gospel? Why do people hate New Age?
It's down to a little thing called /personal taste/!

I don't hate Rap. It's not my favourite type of music, but there are a few Rap artists that I like. I have an immense amount of respect for Tupac, and one of my favourite Hip-Hop groups is A Tribe Called Quest.

Asking a question like this is just asking for trouble though - and pretty soon we'll get someone from the Rap section come over to the R&P section complaining about how they get loads of haters.. it happens. Asking this isn't making matters any better, just accept that not everyone is going to like every single type of music out there..

People hate it for these reasons
- Artists like soulja boy thinks more on making rap songs then rap records so they sing repetative lines showing no creativity lyrically and in idea.
- Rock Fanboys who do not respect music like the musicians do, like P. Diddy buying the lead singer of Good Charlotte a BMW for his B-day or Kid Rock starting his career in hip hop.
- Most rappers think that people want to listen to violence, women, and money which causes them to lose creativity in the songs ideas. But there are other's who don't rap about the usual these are the real MC's
- Last is the image of the rappers outside entertainment they tend to reflect all rappers character through the act of one single individual if the act is violent. The world however ignores the good deeds rappers do or accomplishments outside music.
(Lil Jon finishing College, Lil Wayne attending College, Snoop Dogg's youth football endeavors where he disciplines himself from cursing in front of the kids or smoking)

I think most people are like me, take it or leave it.
I don't HATE rap music, I just like bits and pieces. I personally find most gangsta rap to be too poserish and contrived. It's all been done, and until someone finds a new way to do it, everyone's going to be stepping down the heels of N.W.A. and 2pac.
I find old skool hip hop to be awesome though. This may sound like a contradiction, but it's because the MCs of old-skool don't take themselves too seriously.
Acts like Ugly Duckling, MC Abdominal and even the veteran Beastie Boys all have the humour factor and it's this that sets them apart. Hell, even N.W.A. could take a crooked look at themselves!

So really, I think it comes down to a sense of humour thing.

Most of the time it is not very creative. The songs that do get popular are played by radiostations every 2 hours, they get old very quick.

It seems many of the lyrics are written with the level of a 6th grade education.

Once a song gets popular there are 3 + more songs that come out that sound exactly the same.

Some peopld don't like the bass frequencies. Some think all music should be played on real instruments, and acually written by the artist.

Then comes that factor of being racist, demening to women and having content dealing with drugs and guns.

A lot of people don't like rap music because it isn't within their "tune". Everyone is different but rap music is difficult to tolerate for many people because it doesn't sound natural to them, doesn't make sense and not naturally sang. You can also add the fact that many rap music songs contact "explicit" or offensive lyrics. The general population don't like that!

Because they listen to the crap that gets played on the radio and judge an entire genre based on that. They should go out of their way to listen to a variety of hip hop artists properly and then see how they feel about it. But sadly, they'd rather get on their high horse with an uneducated opinion than educate themselves and admit that they might have been wrong.

Well I can't stand the stuff so I guess I'm qualified to answer this. My first impulse is to say it's too violent and negative--yet there are violent movies I watch and enjoy. I think the real reason is that it's so different from the music I grew up on (Classic Rock) that I don't even recognize it as music. And it comes from a younger generation of musicians, and I'm not really connected to what they feel or think. My gut feeling is it's pretty much normal for one generation not to appreciate--or even to disparage-- another generation's music. I guess the important thing is not to care too much if others don't like your music--it's your music and you're entitled to listen to it, just like I was entitled to listen to mine.
